Long before he became the “King of Bollywood,” Shah Rukh Khan was just a boy from Delhi with dreams of joining the Indian Army. From NSD Mess to Movie Sets
SRK’s father managed the mess at the National School of Drama (NSD), where the young Khan unknowingly absorbed the art of acting from some of India’s greatest performers. After a sports injury cut short his athletic aspirations, Shah Rukh stumbled into theater, and eventually into television with Fauji—the show that marked his official entry into acting.
From there, his journey was nothing short of cinematic. He famously signed five films in a single day, with Hema Malini giving him his first big film break.

While Shah Rukh Khan dazzles onscreen, it’s his wife Gauri Khan who anchors him in reality. “She manages our productions because I’m a bit of a spendthrift,” he says with a laugh. But it goes deeper—he credits her for giving his life purpose, helping him navigate fame, failure, and everything in between.
Their love story began when she was 14, and he was 18. Despite cultural challenges, they married and became one of India’s most admired power couples.
The Man Behind the Superstar
Whether it’s shooting biscuit commercials for “cheap thrills,” almost getting into trouble at weddings, or staying up in his best clothes because of his fear of dying in pajamas—SRK is as quirky as he is deep. “Death before pajamas,” he jokes.
He also admits to bouts of anxiety and loneliness, but attributes his composure to self-awareness, which he picked up during his theater days. “Self-deprecation is a sign of confidence,” he tells the AIB hosts, laughing off his own myth.

or Shah Rukh Khan, being a father is perhaps the most grounding role of all. His interaction with his youngest son Abram, especially during his role as Bauaa Singh in Zero, is heartwarming. “He just saw me as Papa,” SRK chuckles.
As he reflects on his own parents, their sacrifices, and the love they gave him, SRK’s emotional depth shines through. “My mother passed away unsatisfied, so I prayed she wouldn’t go. I tried to keep her wanting more from life.”
To him, being “zero” isn’t a failure—it’s a new beginning.
